Still Makes Me Laugh

It was never just the heat.
It was the way you made everything feel like
a joke only we were in on.

Even the silence had punchlines with you...
The long rides felt shorter
when your shoulder leaned too close
and neither of us said a thing.

Top Ramen, hot as summer afternoons in the sunroom
Wavelengths turning dusty spirals to
Soul-warming nourishment
Nostalgia when the time is up
Not because I miss the taste —
but because they won’t turn pink like they used to.
Not without the laughter that followed.

Vanish the way you always do
A shrug to the universe, not to me
I'll always admire the audacity in the mystery
Which side of this inside joke do I land?

And maybe that’s just your way —
Flash and shadow,
framing moments no one else sees,
Not even you, not even me.

It's all in my head
I'm sure
Uncertain, but sure
Some stories end with
"Who is this?"
