Imagine you have arrived at a closed door. What does it look like and what's on the other side?
I was walking through life in autopilot. The ride is going well, smooth and uneventful, really. One day I notice a door that catches my eye. It's cheap wood and bare surface made me think, "Wow, that could use a nice cherry oak staining. Thats would look great." I keep thinking about this raggedy ass door. As my trip continued, the door revolved around and around in my mind, different stains and tints, somewhat like a sample view when you're ordering on amazon, and you can see what your item will look like in different colors. Nonetheless, I realize, this is MY door. I can't let my door just hang out there in its existence looking so bare and dry. I take a pit stop from my auto pilot programming to go to the hardware store. I find the perfect cherry oak stain and grab a brush. On my way to the register, I passed the knob isle. How beautiful, a nice glass knob. Glass? Yes, I'd love a stain-glass window. I pick up a jigsaw, and some other essentials listed in the YouTube shorts that I watched a million times before cancelling auto pilot.
As I'm sanding and priming my door for its Glow Up, I start to wonder...what's behind this door? Is THAT for me too? I mind my business and try to focus on the door. I'm making sure the stain is applied evenly, coating each edge with love and care. The edges that frame my stained glass are crisp and precise, so sharp, they're perfeKt with a K. The sunlight shining through will be magnificent for sure. Is the sun on the other side of this door? Or the moon? Will the moon be as beautiful shining through this window as the sun would be? I'll know soon enough. The final touch will be my doorknob. I can't wait to turn it and discover what's on the other side...I can't wait to see what's meant for me on the other side. I'm polishing my new doorknob and reaching to turn that thing to the left and right to open this beautiful door.
I jiggle the knob with my eyes closed and give my door a firm tug. It opens wide and my eyes follow suit. To my surprise there's a mirror. Just a mirror. No sun shining through the stained glass, no moon glowing dimly through the late-night hours. Just me. Frustrated with all the work I put into creating my door I thought, "So I'm the sunshine and the glow of the moon?!" As the words left my lips, they transformed from sarcasm to poetry. I repeated them over and over until the joke became my testimony. I realized that yes, I am the sunlight and the glow of the moon. The work I put towards making my door the best door was actually the work I put into myself to become the best version of me that I could be. I looked deep into that mirror and found my smile. It sparkled and shined bright through the stained glass. Absolutely beautiful.
This is good!
